Recorded in Rochester, New Hampshire, circa 1997 on a Tascam 488 cassette multitracker. I vaguely remember that the lyrics are about time travel and the paradoxes inherent to it, but it's all pretty foggy now.

Be sure to bring the bag along
If you want to tag along with me.
It's like the saying goes, you know
That no one ever rides for free.
It's time you realized that it
Comes as no surprise.
I can see it in your eyes.
Your pack of crackerjack's been hacked,
Ransacked, and you can't find the prize.
But if you send it back post-paid
You'll get another chance to try.
And when your birthday comes,
Your friends will all be hiding in the dark.
They'll wait for hours, then go home
While you're still sitting in the park.
Visions on a beam, repeating on a screen,
Ascending, you're a dream...
So, bring your crystal ball along
So you won't get it wrong this time.
The only way to know the future
Is if you go back in time.
But if you change your mind, revealing
What in your time you concealed
When you get back, you'll find
That you might not have even been to be.
I guess you realize and
It comes as no surprise,
You've seen it all before and
You'll see it all some more,
Repeating endlessly, the same reality.
You can't be there and here,
If you go back, you'll disappear...
If you go back, you'll disappear...
If you go back, you'll disappear...

If I was in my car anytime from September 2018 for the next eight or nine months, this CD was playing. It never left the CD player. It's that good. tim nelson
If you've never heard The Dirty Three, you need to. If you've heard them once or just a few times and thought "Yeah, they're alright" then you need to hear more. An acquired taste, but habit-forming. tim nelson
