Caution! Mind Your Head

about

I (barely) remember being in Thessaloniki in the late spring of 1990, where I'd just bought a bouzouki (the round-backed one that I still have) and was playing it on the balcony of my hotel overlooking the waterfront and on about my third ouzo when someone among us suggested we go check out the local club scene. One of our party had gotten the (very secretive) word about an underground club about eight or ten blocks from the hotel, so off we went. It looked like nothing more than a parking garage/closed office building/closed storefronts and we thought our friend was full of it, but he said, no, we have to go down this alley to this door and use a special knock... So we did and the door opened a crack and this muscle-y Greek dude about 6'9" in a leather vest was looking at us suspiciously until our friend said some sort of magical incantorial password and the big guy immediately opened the door and motioned us down the stairway. It was a very looooong stairway indeed because the room it led to (about 50' by 75') had a ceiling about 16' up. The walls and ceiling were all painted black with fluorescent details and the room was all lit by black lights and every ten feet or so there was a mannequin (both male and female ones) of the type usually seen fully dressed and modeling clothing in a department store except these mannequins were only visible from the waist up, mounted sideways at 90 degrees on the walls, completely naked and painted metallic silver and every one of them seemed to be both pointing at and gazing at something on the other side of the room. The sound system (full surround) was pumping the latest 1990-era acid house/Eurotechno/whatever it was... The place was neither empty nor crowded. Behind the bar (an island in the centre of the room), as reinforcement to the regular bartender (and drinks were certainly flowing) was the owner. He was the son of one Greek parent and one British parent and was absolutely thrilled to be able to spend the evening speaking English to us, as everyone else there was Greek. He decided that I and my companions should be treated, on the house, to the fine, high-quality Russian vodkas that adorned the top shelf (and freezers) of his bar. He poured and poured and poured. And poured and poured and poured. The next morning was one of the worst hangovers of my entire life. A few days later, back in Turkey where I lived at the time, I wrote this song with that club in mind...
