20 River Saco Chilly and Wide (1:23)
An atmospheric soundscape with processed wooden flutes. In 1675, three drunken sailors from an English ship anchored just off the mouth of the Saco River in Maine not far from my home came across a woman from the Sokokis tribe with her infant son Menewee in a canoe. The mother’s name is lost to history, but she was the wife of Squandro, sachem of the Sokokis who had lived in peace with the English settlers for about half a century. At the time, there was a European misconception that Native American children were able to swim from birth; wishing to see if this was true, the sailors grabbed Menewee and threw him into the river where, of course, the baby sank. The mother dove in, but it was too late and Menewee died soon afterwards. (Some versions have the mother drowning as well.) Squandro mourned for three days before uttering a curse on the Saco that the river would “claim three lives a year until all white men fled its banks”. The river has a strong undertow and there have been many drownings. Curse or not, the previously peaceful Squandro soon influenced the nearby Androscoggin tribe to attack the European settlers, which was a factor igniting King Philip’s War.
