Written and recorded circa 1997 in Rochester, NH. I had already written the music and asked my then-four-year-old daughter Chloë "What should this song be about?" and she told me that she thought it should be about a ladybug, so there you have it.
lyrics
*************************
Working in my garden, I saw
Something small on a leaf.
I bent down to see what it was,
And to my disbelief
I saw something the likes of which
I had never seen.
It was doing a little dance on my green beans.
Tiny and red, a hat on her head,
It was a ladybug.
Polka dots on her wings, doing her thing,
It was a ladybug.
I couldn't believe when she jumped on my sleeve,
It was a ladybug.
Yeah, what a sight, in broad daylight,
It was a ladybug.
Dropped my hoe right there in the dirt,
Right there it fell.
She held onto the sleeve of my shirt,
She had a shiny shell.
And then she spoke, what do you know?
She said "Hello!"
Her voice was much higher than that:
Super-soprano.
Red and black, I was taken aback,
It was a ladybug.
Polka dots on her shell, it was all very well,
It was a ladybug.
She needed to use half a dozen black shoes.
It was a ladybug.
She carried a purse so full I thought it would burst,
That little ladybug.
Oh, alright; a glass of water...
Oh, alright, just one more hug...
Oh, alright, I'll tell you a story
About a ladybug.
Didn't want to be rude so I offered some food,
Some food to the ladybug.
"Would you like some tea? Please have some with me.
Some tea, little ladybug?"
She said "I'd like to stay but I must fly away."
Goodbye, little ladybug!
Now the story's been read and it's time for bed,
Goodnight, little ladybug...
Goodnight...

If I was in my car anytime from September 2018 for the next eight or nine months, this CD was playing. It never left the CD player. It's that good. tim nelson
If you've never heard The Dirty Three, you need to. If you've heard them once or just a few times and thought "Yeah, they're alright" then you need to hear more. An acquired taste, but habit-forming. tim nelson
